Choosing the right children’s books should not be a huge chore, instead, it should be something that is shared with your children. Some children do not like to read and others can read two or three books a month, depending on the size of the book. The challenge can be finding books for the non readers to enjoy and that gets them interested in reading more books. If you allow your children to shop for books with you, this can help them to take an interest.
Each child is different and what one child may find to be a great book would bore the pants off of another child. Even some of the most popular children’s books can be met with excitement or dread depending on who is reading the book. The main thing a parent needs to understand is that there are books that any child will love. It can take some trial and error but eventually parents can find a genre that fits their child perfectly.
Some ways to determine what books to give your children is to look at their other interests. If a child loves sports then give them some books that pertain to sports. This can help them get the reading bug by introducing a topic that they love. There are many famous children’s books that are genre based and that are classics too. Try to find those books and any parent can turn their non reading child into an avid reader.
It is important for parents to consider books that are age appropriate too. The story in Charlotte’s Web is timeless but it may be too much for younger children to understand. Conversely, Hop on Pop is a great book for younger readers but is not a great book to buy an older child. Choosing classic children’s books is a great way to go because they tend to be appropriate for a wider age base than some of the newer releases.
One of the best aspects of reading is learning while enjoying a great book. One way to teach children tolerance is through multicultural children’s books. These books are written about the cultural differences we find in our country and are written in a way that children get the point. With such a diverse society, it is vital that we teach our younger generation the importance of loving everyone no matter where they come from, their religious backgrounds or the color of their skin.
At the end of the day, the best children’s books are the ones that they want to read over and over again. These books become like friends for them and they feel emotions when reading them like joy, sadness, excitement and even love. When choosing the right children’s book, keep the child in mind and you cannot go wrong. Do not force them to read a book that they are not interested in just because you enjoyed it as a child. Allow them to build their own library and to read books that mean something to them.
