When you do not have the
land for a garden or if you just want to have a small garden as a means by
which to teach your children about gardening then you might want to consider
creating a small container garden.
A small container garden
is easy to create and can be stored on a windowsill, a patio, or even your
doorstep. You can practically grow any vegetable that you can grow in your
yard in a small container garden. Some of the ideal vegetables for growing
in a container however include tomatoes, beans, lettuce, green onions,
squash, and peppers.
To begin creating your
garden you will need the following items:
Several containers
Soil
Seeds
Fertilizer (Compost from your compost bin)
Water
Light
The containers used for a
container garden can be anything from a large plastic tub to a clay pot.
You will want to make sure that the container has holes for proper
drainage. You will want to start out the seeds in a warm area that will
receive sufficient sunlight for 4 to 8 weeks. The easiest way to fertilize
these gardens is using a nutrient solution that can be poured over the
soil.
Watering is one of the
most important aspects of taking care of your container garden, watering
once a day is recommended, checking to make sure that they are draining
properly. Children have a tendency to over water, so be sure to guide
them.
As for light, it is also
necessary and it is better to use full sunlight than half shade, half
sunlight. The best part about a container garden is if there isn’t enough
adequate light you can easily move the plants to a place where this is the
case.
You will find container
gardens to be quite simple to maintain. Enjoying the end product will be
the greatest part. Watch your child delight in what they have created.
You may be surprised by what they eat when they grow it themselves.
