Develop Writing Skills Through
Drawing
|
| Drawing pictures
comes easier to a child than writing the words to a story. The
pictures that they create are often stories themselves. |
|
Much of writing is
about the way to author describes details and the scene. Through
drawing pictures you can help your child learn to create colorful stories.
Here is what you can to to help connect your child's drawing with writing. |
- Sit with your child while they are
drawing their picture. Children will often talk while they draw.
Take this opportunity to listen.
- Ask your child open ended questions
about their drawing. These questions will allow the child to expand
upon their thinking.
Some types of questions you can ask are:
Why did you color the house purple?
Where is the car in your picture going?
What is the little girl doing?
- Ask your child if they can add any more
details to their picture. Adding details to a picture is just like
adding details to a story. The more that they can add to a picture
the easier it will be for them to add details and description to a story.
- Talk with your child about their
picture. Talking and using new vocabulary gives your child a depth
of language that will aid them in their future writing.

You and your child may decide
to write the picture story down in words or give the picture a title.
This is another way to connect drawing to writing. |
