Celebrating Earth Day
A Little History

Earth Day has quite a history.  Taking approximately 7 years to create, Senator Gaylord Nelson began trying to establish the day back in 1962.  He was concerned with the deteriorating conditions of the environment and felt something must be done about it.  He went to key members of the Senate and even to the president with little or not results at first.  It wasn’t until 1969 by way of a conference in Seattle that Earth Day became a reality.  There Nelson invited key people to play a role in the national working class demonstration on the environment.

This demonstration was held in 1970 and attracted much attention, even the New York Times wrote an article about the shocking news of the environmental events.   The first Earth Day was actually held on March 21, 1970.  Earth Day is now a platform for all to coordinate their efforts to help the environment.

Many Earth Day events are held in the form of fairs parades and festivals.  There are also great efforts put forth to do things specifically for the environment such as trash pick up days, recycling, the cleaning of bodies of water or other parts of nature.  Efforts are made to educate the public about ways that they can be more environmentally friendly to our earth.
