Imagine What Life Used To Be Like

Hundreds of years ago there were no park benches, no play grounds and no huge buildings lining the streets. Take your child to a park and point out what the area may have looked like when none of the modern conveniences existed. Native Americans were in every part of what is now the United States and lived in various homes, tipis, hogans, longhouses and others.

Imagine what the street you live on would look like.

One activity is to have your child draw what your street looks like now with trees, cars and house – then have them draw the street as what it probably looked like before. There will be many more trees; maybe the entire street was covered with trees a long time ago! Have them draw people walking across the country, through the forests, walking with their entire family to the next place they would live.

You can talk about the changes people have gone through to get where we are today. Houses had to be built, and almost everything that is used in  the common household had had to be invented! Imagine using handmade tools, sending scouts out to find enemies, hunting for foods, picking berries and living off the land.

Life is so different now this activity could be applied to anything in your life: walking or riding horses to somewhere rather than driving, hunting rather than going to the grocery store.
