A Fun Way to Improve Reading Comprehension

Reading is such an important skill that our children need to learn.  Just reading something though is not enough; a child must learn to comprehend what they read.  You can do activities with your child that allows them to learn to comprehend what they read.  One of these activities is to “act out” a story, as it is read to them, they must in turn listen and do what is being said by the reader.  This forces a child to connect the emotions in the words with them and truly to understand what is going on in the story.  What the author or writer is trying to convey to its readers.  Is the character happy or sad, angry or disappointed?  These are all things that your child will need to comprehend.  Acting out the story will allow them to demonstrate whether they comprehend what the story is truly meaning.

1.  Acting out the story can be a fun activity for your child, especially if they have brothers and sisters who can get in on the action and play the opposing character.  Think about stories that your child can act out.   Some good choices might be, “Little Red Riding Hood” or “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”.

2.  After having them act out the story, have them explain to you what just happened.  Then ask them questions about it, questions such as, “Well how do you think that made them feel?”  Or “How would you feel if that happened to you?”  This will help them to better connect to the story and what was going on in the story.  You can also ask questions such as “Do you think we can learn something from this story?” because many stories do have a meaning to them or are written to teach a lesson.  This is also part of your child’s comprehension of the story itself.

3.  You might then want to give children another challenge, which would be creating their own story.  This is not only fun for them, but also educational.  This requires them to use many of the skills that they have already learned and put them into practice.

4.  They could then act out their own story or even illustrate it.  The more creative you allow your child to be the better.  This will truly help them to develop their skills and increase their confidence level.
