To help teach your child about light and
shadows try the following shadow games. First, collect five items to use to
create shadows on a wall. Along with the five items, you will need a
flashlight and a dark room. You create the shadow by holding the object a
few feet from the wall, standing back and shining the light beam from your
flashlight onto the wall. Have you child try to recognize the item from the
shadow, which it creates, on the wall.
Have you child try to name the item from
different angles as you turn the item. You can also move the object nearer
and further from the flashlight to create different size shadows. Talk with
your child about how the different distances create different shadows.
You can also use a plate to create a circle
shadow and a line shadow. Talk to your child about how light travels in a
straight line in the air and therefore cannot bend around objects. The
shadow that is formed from the light will be the same shape as the object.
The closer the object is to the light the more light it blocks out and
therefore the bigger the shadow.
You can allow children to try the different
distances and lengths as well as different shapes using different objects to
see this for themselves.
