The Science of Sound:
Making a Shoebox Guitar

Music is sound vibrations that are controlled by the different physical elements of an instrument.  One particular instrument that is easy to recreate using a shoebox is a guitar.  Here are the supplies that you will need in order to do so:

1.  A shoebox
2.  Four to six rubber bands of various thicknesses
3.  A piece of board for the neck for the guitar (This is not necessary for sound, but makes it into a guitar shape)
4.  Pencil
5.  Supplies to decorate your shoebox

Start by cutting out a hole in the top of the shoebox.  Then wrap the rubber bands around the box making sure there is space between them. Attach the neck of the guitar behind the rubber bands on the side of the guitar opposite to where you cut the hole.

Next step is to make the bridge of the guitar using a pencil.  This allows the rubber bands to more easily vibrate.

For extra fun, decorate your guitar when you are finished.

Have your child strum the guitar or pluck the rubber band strings to hear the different sounds that it makes.  Then, have your child put their finger down on a rubber band and pluck again.  Notice and talk about the sound differences when you do this.
